This short film explores the emotional worlds behind three Chinese phrases: 面子 (miàn zi), 缘分 (yuán fèn), and 关系 (guān xì) — phrases that in a sense have no direct translation in English. In my own experience, explaining these words to non-Chinese speakers often means telling a scenario, a small story, or a moment where the feeling becomes clearer than the definition. This film takes that same idea, using a series of visually driven encounters between two strangers in New York City to describe the phrases through lived moments rather than literal translation. What begins as an awkward misunderstanding slowly turns into something tender, shaped by coincidence, shared experiences, and quiet connection.
